Roll a plugin back to a chosen version in ReDock Web

Roll a plugin back puts back the version a snapshot holds, taken just before an update. Sometimes the version you need is a different one. The release that broke the site might be two updates back, or you might want to step over a bad release to the one after it.

From a site’s plugin list, ReDock Web can put any version that wordpress.org still publishes onto the site, older or newer than the one running. A snapshot of the running version is taken first.

This works for plugins published in the WordPress.org directory, because that is where the versions come from.

Roll a plugin back

  1. Open the site, then Manage, then Plugins.

  2. On the plugin’s row, press Roll back to… to open the list of versions. Every plugin row has that button except ReDock Connect’s own.

  3. Pick the version. The list holds every version wordpress.org still publishes, newest first. The version the site is running is shown but not offered, and any version with a published vulnerability is marked Vulnerable.

  4. Read the confirm, then go ahead. It names the version you are leaving and the one you are going to, and when you are going backwards it says so plainly. If the version you picked has a published vulnerability, the confirm names it, gives its score and says which version clears it.

What happens on the site

ReDock Connect works through this in order, and stops at the first step that fails:

  1. It asks wordpress.org whether that version is published. If it is not, the answer lists the versions that are, and nothing on the site has been touched.
  2. It takes a snapshot of the version you are leaving. No snapshot, no change.
  3. It downloads the version you picked from wordpress.org and installs it over the running one.

A plugin that was active before is active afterwards.

Moving forward works exactly the same way. If the older version turns out worse, open the list again and pick the version you left.

Every change made this way is recorded under your name, like any other change you make from ReDock Web.

AI apps

The rule in the workspace’s AI policy that covers installing, removing and updating plugins covers rolling one back too. With that rule off, no AI app can do it.
